We face many stresses stemming from crowded town life, such as long commutes on trains, human relations, the hustle and bustle crowds, and a car-dependent society. On the other hand, while a solo activity, going to the toilet is an inevitable daily behavior for human beings as well as an opportunity for refreshment: you may wash your hands, look in the mirror, and regain a sense of calmness.
In this sense, the public toilet may be an oasis in the city that is open to everyone.
We consider this an important role of the public toilet, which is also named “restroom.”
Junko Kobayashi, Ph.D., CEO of Architectural Design Office Gondola, has received the Prime Minister's Commendation for Contributions to the Promotion of a Gender-Equal Society for 2026 fiscal year from Cabinet Office in Japan. The award ceremony was held at Prime Minister's Official Residence on 25 June, 2026, where the certificate of commendation was directly handed by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Details of Achievements
Dr. Kobayashi served as a chairperson "Council on Standards and Application for the Number of Toilet Facilities by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. She spearheaded efforts to improve toilet facilities by incorporating with a gender-equality perspective by proposing appropriate standards for the number of toilet cubicles to alleviate congestion in women's toilets.
This award is presented to the individuals who have made significant, long-standing contributions to the promotion of the gender-equal society, in recognition of the achievement.
